Apple pie

My plan this past weekend-: make tarte tatin. French upside down pie.

Life happened instead.

Or better said, planting five fruit trees (including a persimmons) and attending a pruning class happened.

So. . . tonight Luke and I made apple pie.

Much simpler than fancy smancy tarte tatin that requires the flour, salt and sugar to chill for at least two hours and then the dough to head back into the refrig for another twenty - this all before touching the apples.

By the way I love peeling apples!

Winter weather, no Florida Fun

Sadness.

My Florida trip is officially canceled. The conference and with it the flight are no more. Ugh to winter weather.

This means no warm weather vacation for Luke and me. Ironically Luke still has a ticket, and we're paying for two nights at the Old Pineapple Inn. Anyone in Orlando who needs a weekend getaway?

And yet, given FEMA is literally shoveling out the Midwest, I guess it could be worse!!

Here are safe and warm wishes to all affected by the weather.

a Fig tree

a Fig. warm succulent fruit. sensual plant.

i've Always wanted a fig tree. growing Up in the tropics I plucked figs off the tree and plopped them in my mouth with glee. the Same applied to pomegranates fresh off the tree except they painstakingly required extractly each ruby seed. naive To the splendor I experienced I took it for granted.

now Years wiser, or just years older (I'm not sure which), I have a fig tree. my Own. well As much as you can "own" nature. it's Planted behind my raised garden beds in the Northwest corner of my yard, aka sun light central.

Portlandia

If you ever wondered what life in Portland is like, check it out at the link below. You will not be disappointed!

If the trailer peaked your interest, why not further explore the strange land of Portlandia.

And if you wonder, do Joy and Luke eat out of dumpsters and visit cult chicken farms? We can reassure we don't do it, not yet at least. But we are considering joining a hide and seek league called Alli Alli Atson Free. Seriously.

(Oh wise bloggers, any suggestions on how to include youtube video box on a post?)

Jammers

jammers. a short dough pastry with jam. tasty. best served hot out of the oven.

Luke thinks that bakers need to get up early. I suppose most do due to inappropriate societal pressures. But not this one. With the flour and butter prepared the night before I "sprung" out of bed at nine, and we had warm jammers by ten.

The photo is on our purple stools from "Natural" Furniture, aka unpainted furniture, we painted in the fall. The dish is from our trusty Goodwill. (I'm telling you in case you want to reproduce this shit, I mean shot, at home.)

Ok happy Sunday! Remember to eat well and often.

BTW, does anyone know if I can include recipes from books? Or is that a copyright issue??

The good egg

A dear friend gifted me a painting called The Good Egg. It's of a dark rimmed glasses girl holding a gigantic egg. My friend said I was a good egg. I don't know what that makes the girl but regardless I hope I'm not dropped.

This blog is about fun. The fun is homemade baked treats photographed with maybe a little prose or poetry. And who knows what else... So as a good egg I begin this blog (or re-start it as I created it last year).

Seeing that all blogs deserve a dedication of sorts I dedicate this blog to the following:

Here's to farm fresh eggs bursting with flavor in custard.
Here's to cold butter inspiring flakiness in jammers.

Here's to my sister-in-law Sara who couponed me to buying the bakery book in the first place.
Here's to my friend Ruth who gave me the painting. And to all my long lost dear friends who ask, so what are you up to?!
